LYC APPOINTS SIR ANDREW HAINES, CEO OF NETWORK RAIL, TO OUR BOARD OF TRUSTEES

London Youth Choirs (LYC) is delighted to announce the appointment of Sir Andrew Haines, CEO of Network Rail, to its Board of Trustees. This strategic addition underscores LYC’s commitment to shaping the lives and futures of thousands of young singers across London through the power and shared joy of singing.

LYC is a citywide community of choirs and free school programmes that brings young people together to find their voice, develop musical skills, and experience the joy, connection, and opportunities that singing can provide. At its core, LYC is musically ambitious and intentionally inclusive.

Its values emphasise developing musicianship skills, challenging singers with an extraordinarily ambitious and culturally rich repertoire – from classical to contemporary – and collaborating with leading orchestras, filmmakers, and broadcasters.

A key part of LYC’s mission is to seek out those from disadvantaged backgrounds, offering financial support and removing barriers to participation.

Sir Andrew Haines commented on his appointment: 

“I am incredibly honoured to join the board of London Youth Choirs. The organisation’s dedication to fostering musical talent, empowering young people from all backgrounds, and building confidence and community through singing is truly inspiring. Growing up attending a comprehensive school in South Wales my education was massively enhanced by access to high standards of choral music at school and county level that not everyone today benefits from. That is why I am so passionate about the brilliant, inclusive approach and excellence that is at the heart of everything LYC does. I look forward to contributing to their vital work in shaping the next generation.”

Through its 10 choirs, which meet weekly, and its LYC Schools programmes, London Youth Choirs is addressing low access to music education by bringing the joy of singing to thousands of young people. LYC also provides a diverse pool of vocal talent to the UK’s film, commercial, recording, gaming, and large event industries through LYC Voices, offering unforgettable opportunities for its singers.

As a charity, LYC relies on voluntary income for 76% of its funding, with a growing community of supporters forming a vital part of its work. Sir Andrew’s appointment is set to further bolster LYC’s ability to deliver its ambitious programmes.
