Looking afterthe wellbeing of our members
Looking after the wellbeing of our members is an important aspect of our community-minded ethos.
For many individuals, our rehearsals are the only place where they have a dedicated pastoral support network and someone to talk to. Our Wellbeing Programme safeguards our young people, and supports them with their mental health and self-care.
OUR SUPPORT NETWORK
We have two dedicated Senior Pastoral Carers, Emily Sanders and Katherine Adams, who are also trainee pediatric nurses and have a wealth of pastoral experience. They work closely with our Operations Manager, Bethan Thomas, who has overall responsibility for all Safeguarding matters at LYC. Bethan is supported by our Lead Trustee for Safeguarding, George Wills. As a part of our ongoing Wellbeing Programme, we invite specialist practitioners to come and address particular needs – such as mental health issues and learning difficulties – and to introduce members to practices – such as mindfulness and Alexander Technique – that will have a positive impact on their music and their lives.
Over lockdown we created an online pastoral provision called the Happiness Zone with links to activities, wellbeing suggestions and support sites such as Young Minds. We also provide a weekly pastoral session over zoom for individual members who request it and a confidential messaging service via MyLYC our members area.
Beyond our organisation, we are able to provide access to additional support through the network of specialist organisations we have built up over the years. LYC sits on the NSPCC Voluntary Sector Organisations Safeguarding Advisory Group and the National Safeguarding Youth Forum.
