Winner! Once in Royal David’s City

‘Once in Royal David’s City’ – what do you see, what do you hear?  In December 2020, helped by Gareth Malone and Louise Marshall, LYC set out to find a young Londoner to re-define the tradition for our Festive Concert.

At the end of November we lanched a star search via social media, inviting all young singers in the Greater London area to send us their video performance of the opening verse of ‘Once in Royal David’s’ City’, with the winner to be played at the start of our 2020 online Festive Concert.

Everyone was also invited to attend a free preparatory online singing workshop with Gareth Malone and Louise Marshall, to encourage everyone to find their own personal expressivity.

Following the workshop there were numerous entries to watch, but in the end the judges unanimously picked the performance by 10 year old Sarai. And on 21 December, at 6.30pm, Sarai’s solo opened the concert – we couldn’t have asked for a more perfect opening!

Sarai told us:

“I was very nervous when I did the audition video for the competition. I was thrilled to hear that I had been shortlisted, when I found out that I had actually won, I was overjoyed and overcome with emotion. I am extremely excited and proud to be joining the LYC girl’s choir and look forward to being able to perform with them, to a real live audience. I would love to be in a Musical theatre show in the future because I really enjoy singing show tunes.”

Everyone at LYC is delighted for Sarai’s success and thrilled to welcome her to the LYC Family. We would also like to congratulate and thank everyone who took part in the workshop and competition, with special mention to Highly Commended entries Sophia, Iman Sophia and Carlotta.

Would you like to join LYC this term? Despite lockdown, we’re still singing! We’d love to hear from interested new members. For more information about joining check out this section of our website
