THE IMPACT OF THE CORONAVIRUS LOCKDOWN ON LYC

Like children and young people all over the UK, most LYC members are currently isolating at home, unable to see friends, attend school or extra-curricular activities. There are also many LYC members for whom the lockdown means the reduction of a vital support network, or confinement in a difficult home situation.

LYC is about so much more than learning to sing. We create community through choir, bringing together young people from diverse backgrounds and circumstances. While the current lockdown has put a stop to our regular activities, we believe that the act of singing together is more important now than ever, especially for children no longer at school or in further education who are missing both creative activities and social contact.

We have therefore moved quickly to create an online resource – LYC Live – featuring weekly tuition from our regular conductors, classes in musicianship and repertoire, and guest appearances from other choirs. As part of our continued effort to provide wellbeing support for our members, we have also developed an online ‘Happiness Zone’, which includes a range of self-care activities and a ‘Safe Space’ contact service with our pastoral team.

LYC LIVE

Our new online resource for teaching and supporting members during lockdown

Members can access LYC Live through the members’ area of LYC’s new website. The pre-recorded sessions are retained on LYC Live, which means that members can revisit them numerous times. The response from parents (particularly those of younger members) has been enthusiastic and is helping to relieve the pressure of home-schooling.

The LYC Live Programme Schedule

4pm Kids Choir Kick Starter
Aimed at our younger members aged 7-11, led by Rachel Staunton (LYC’s Artistic Director) with guest appearances from other music education professionals. It is a lively session of singing technique, warm ups, musicianship games and introducing and practising repertoire that our Junior Choirs were already learning.

5pm Secondary Singing Workshop
Designed for members of our Cambiata and Senior Choirs who are at secondary school. Led by LYC’s existing conductors, it is a chance to keep our teenagers singing. As well as practising current repertoire, sessions to date have included body percussion, beatboxing and choral folk music.

6pm Musicianship Club
A live weekly session on Zoom, principally aimed at members who are either advanced at musicianship skills or aged 16+. Directed by our Head of Musicianship & Conductor of LYC Chamber Choir, Greg Beardsell, it’s an interactive session on music theory and ear training; a great opportunity for members to increase skills during lockdown.

7pm Senior Choir Seminar
A dedicated music workshop aimed at members of LYC Senior and Chamber Choirs (aged 16-22). Directed by Rachel Staunton, and with special guests such as pianist Dan Moriyama, Voces 8 and The Swingle Singers, this session introduces members to new choral music and ensembles. It gives them a chance to learn and sing repertoire remotely, and also opens their ears to new concepts, whilst developing their choral knowledge.

8pm Senior Social
Addressing the emotional void created when our young people are unable to come together, our weekly Senior Social via Zoom is run by our two social secretaries, (Senior Choir members) and facilitated by 2 members of staff. The hour-long sessions have so far included a quiz night, bingo and general chatting and catching up. The group is very supportive of each other and includes some key workers, for whom this social time is a lifeline.

Thank you so much for managing to keep the children singing and not losing this sense of connection during this difficult time. We hope you and your families are well. Thank you.”

I crept into the session to see Rafi having great fun making up some harmony. He really enjoyed it- totally engaged for the whole time and it was so lovely to see a big smile on his face! Thank you LYC”

It was so lovely to hear him singing away, his little brother joined in a bit too! Thank you so much for doing this. It brightened up our Monday for all of us!”
